Study Finds Lotto Tickets And Scratchies Can Lead To Problem Gambling
Chronic problem gambling issues could be kick-started in young people by giving them lotto tickets and scratchies as presents, a new study has revealed.
The research conducted by Curtin University surveyed 2,112 Australians and found of those who only used lottery tickets to gamble, more than one third struggled with addiction issues.
Lead author Leon Booth said the data found scratch lottery tickets - commonly known as scratchies - were particularly harmful due to their `instant win` design.

`We believe that this is because some features of scratchies make them more appealing to problem gamblers, such as instantly letting the user know if they have won a prize and giving users the impression they were close to winning,` Mr Booth said.
`We also found people who are generally vulnerable to developing gambling issues, such as younger adults and males, were most likely to experience problems with lottery gambling.`
Study co-author Professor Simone Pettigrew said scratchies and lottery tickets were an `inappropriate gift` for children and young people
Study co-author Professor Simone Pettigrew said lottery products could still cause serious harm to users despite many believing they were a `soft` form of gambling.
`The public needs to understand that lottery products such as scratchies and lotto tickets are a true form of gambling and are therefore inappropriate gifts for children and youth,` Professor Pettigrew said.
`Lottery products need to be acknowledged as more than harmless fun and a genuine type of gambling.`
Professor Pettigrew called on policy makers to put measures in place that would reduce the harm caused by gambling through lottery tickets or scratchies.
`Our new findings add to an increasing body of evidence showing lottery products are associated with harm in a substantial minority of users.`
